Google announces support for standalone Daydream VR headsets

The virtual reality platform, introduced a year ago, will now support a new line of standalone headsets that do not require a PC or smartphone connection to run.

On the second day of Google I/O 2017 developer conference, Google announced an update for its Daydream VR platform, which has been christened as Daydream Euphrates. It has also been confirmed that HTC and Qualcomm will be the two partners in this venture and they will work with Google in bringing out these standalone VR headsets.

The move marks a major evolution of Daydream, which launched as a platform for compatible smartphones in October alongside a motion-sensitive controller and phone-cradle headset. "WorldSense enables positional tracking, meaning the headset tracks your precise movements in space - and it does this all without any external sensors to install". If one is using a Google Pixel XL device, the experience will most likely be unbridled and exceptional.

While some might have been expecting or hoping for a standalone Daydream headset to be priced somewhere in the middle of the already available Daydream View and more expensive PC-based virtual reality offerings, it seems that won't be the case.

An update to provide both the S8 and S8 Plus with Daydream compatibility is due in the summer. So, you can check notifications, see a web browser, and more while in VR. The technology uses several sensors included in the device to make the virtual experience match the real world, as much as it can. "Getting into VR is as easy as picking the thing up". The new headsets will also be including Worldsense tracking technology, which according to Cal Bavor, the Google VP for VR, will offer dramatically improved tracking.

Tango is also one of the core technologies behind the company's new Visual Positioning Service (VPS), which helps devices understand their location indoors. Users pull up the dashboard and simply select the casting destination, this even works switching between apps. HTC's announcement is a world first, but considering the competitive nature of VR, we're expecting rival companies like Oculus VR and Sony to chime in as well.
