'Guardians' Is a Stud, While 'King Arthur' Is A Box Office Dud

'Guardians' Is a Stud, While 'King Arthur' Is A Box Office Dud

That most flexible of ancient legends gets a new workout in Guy Ritchie's "King Arthur: Legend of the Sword", the first in what's rumored to be a six-film series - box-office willing. Why spend money to go see yet another Arthur pull that sword out of the stone?

King Arthur, helmed by Guy Ritchie and starring Charlie Hunnam in the titular role, is a dark origins story about the future king's tough upbringing in the back alleys of the city. Guy Ritchie's latest release looked set to fill that gap, with its Snatch meets GoT swagger and even some of the hit show's cast (Aidan Gillen, Michael McElhatton).

"There were many moving elements to that, I got myself in a position because I was emotionally in a bit of a wrought place, I'd had a big thing happen in my life, my personal life, and it had thrown me for a spiral", the British actor explained.

On the limited release front, BH Tilt released "Lowriders" in less than 300 theaters.

Movie No. 2 centers on young Arthur, who is raised in a brothel and trained in combat by a character called "Kung-Fu George", as he evolves from hapless orphan to a sort of prince of thieves.

King Arthur has of course faced some stiff competition, with Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 retaining top spot this weekend with an estimated $61.9 million, while the Amy Schumer / Goldie Hawn comedy Snatched also came out on top with $16.5 million.

Dubbed the first major feature inspired by the people and traditions of the lowrider culture, and produced in part by Imagine Entertainment and Telemundo Films, "Lowriders" targeted high-performing Latino markets with the audience being 53% male and 61% 18 to 34.

"King Arthur: Legend of the Sword" weaves a odd and compelling spell. He has a very interesting and signature style to the way he makes movies, and I would love to line up for whatever project he has next.

Neither "King Arthur" nor "Snatched" were well-received by critics, and audiences weren't all that enchanted either, giving "King Arthur" a B+ CinemaScore and "Snatched" a B.

"King Arthur: Legend of the Sword" is rated PG-13 for sequences of violence and action, some suggestive content and brief strong language; running time: 126 minutes.
