Iannetta beaned, more bad blood as D-Backs top Pirates

Iannetta was struck by a 93 miles per hour pitch from Pittsburgh reliever Johnny Barbato in the seventh inning Friday night.

Manager Torey Lovullo said the Diamondbacks will "take their time" with Iannetta, though it looks like he'll avoid the disabled list. "So, we're taking every precaution possible to make sure he is OK".

Iannetta remained facedown in the dirt for several minutes, and blood was dripping off his face as trainers attended to him.

In defeating the Pirates 11-4 before 21,911 in Chase Field Friday night, their offensive dominance of the opposition continues.

Barbato said the pitch was unintentional, and Lovullo seemed to agree. The D-Backs would go on to score 11 runs in the third and fourth innings combined.

In the opener of the four-game series on Thursday, Diamondbacks ace Zack Greinke took a no-hitter into the eighth inning of an eventual 2-1 win. "It flattened out on me and people were making good contact", he said.

"We preach being ready to be the guy to break the game open", Lovullo said. That said, I don't have a whole lot of faith in the Pittsburgh offense right now, and I like Corbin to bounce back.

- TheRenderMLB (@TheRenderMLB) May 13, 2017Chris Iannetta is now at a local hospital receiving treatment after he was hit in the face with a fastball tonight.

Before he was hit by a pitch, Iannetta had 1 hit in 3 previous at bats including a third inning solo home run that was part of Arizona's seven run outburst in the inning.

Back in 2014, Diamondbacks star Paul Goldschmidt was hit by Ernesto Frieri of the Pirates in August and missed the rest of the year with a broken hand.

Arizona's David Peralta doubled twice and made a diving grab in right field to rob Andrew McCutchen in the first inning. "I think I felt worse than anyone in the stadium at the time".

Drury also doubled and singled to improve his batting average at home to.448 (30 of 67), best in the majors. The 26-year-old settled for a no-decision in his last outing against Milwaukee despite allowing just one run and two hits over seven frames.

The Drury homer knocked starter Tyler Glasnow (1-2) from the game after recording only seven outs.

NOTES: The Pirates added IF David Freese and IF/OF Adam Frazier to the active roster from the disabled list, sending IFs Chris Bostick and Max Moroff to Triple-A Indianapolis.
