Kim Si-woo becomes youngest victor of The Players Championship

Having gained his PGA Tour card at just 17, Kim had failed to make the cut several times in recent outings. He needed a circus shot to manage a bogey.

And the 21-year-old is also comfortably the youngest victor of the so-called "fifth major" - surpassing the record set by former world number one Adam Scott, who was 23 when he won in 2004.

Si Woo Kim may have just announced his name on the world stage by winning the Players Championship, but that could be the last we'll hear from him in a while.

Kim's triumph saw him replace Australia's Adam Scott as the youngest ever victor of the Players Championship, which is regarded as golf's unofficial fifth major.

"While I was practicing with him, he taught me about the course at the Stadium", Kim said.

Stanley was nine shots lower than his playing partner, but a 75 still dropped him into a tie for fourth at 6-under with Rafael Cabrera Bello - who had one of the most sensational finishes in Players history when he made the first double-eagle at the par-5 16th hole, and added a birdie at No. 17.

"Mark Carens, his caddie of two years, noted after the win: "(Si Woo's) way mature.

Elsewhere at Sawgrass on Sunday there was drama as Rafa Cabrera Bello scored a rare albatross.

"From being in a position a couple of weeks ago where I wasn't here to finish tied second, it's a good week", Poulter said after his best finish since November 2014.

The only drama at the end came from Ian Poulter, who was happy just to be here. Speaking after his maiden tour victory, the 21-year-old has resigned himself to serving his country.

J. B. Holmes, left, and his caddie Brandon Parsons, look at the fifth fairway during the final round of The Players Championship golf tournament Sunday, May 14, 2017, in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.

The PGA Championship is the European Tour's flagship event, while the PGA Tour is a season of tournaments played mainly in the United States. That card effectively went to waste, and Kim spent the next two years on the developmental tour until earning his card back to the big leagues.

Kim said he drew inspiration from Choi, who still leads all South Korean players with eight career PGA Tour victories.

Now he's here to stay for at least the next five years, and based on his game, probably much longer.
