Officer shot after man opens fire in nursing home

The gunman was in a wooded area behind the nursing home when he encountered two passers-by, whom he temporarily took hostage.

Authorities say a gunman has fatally shot the police chief of an OH village and two nursing home employees. The sheriff said he didn't know the motive for the shootings, or whether the gunman knew any of the slain.

Rogers says she heard several other gun shots, then a man "yelling and screaming".

Friday's events have shaken the community of Kirkersville, located off Interstate 70 in southern Licking County and home to fewer than 600 people.

Kirkersville Elementary School was placed on lockdown, according to librarian Sue Keller, who couldn't provide details about the incident and whether it involved the school in any way. Students who were already at the elementary school have been moved to Watkins Middle School for pickup. 'I went back in the house, and I heard another one, and that's all I know. Their condition is unknown at this time.

"There is no threat to the public", he said.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich tweeted that he was "shocked & pained by the horrific shooting in Kirkersville, ask for prayers for those injured. Grateful for law enforcement's quick response".

Law enforcement officials are still investigating the situation.

He had arrived at the Pine Kirk Care Center in Kerkersville with a gun at around 7:30 a.m., causing workers there to alert authorities, WBNS reports. "Thinking of the officer, officer's family & all involved", said Senator Sherrod Brown (D) on Twitter. According to the Ohio Department of Health, the facility holds 24 beds, which are certified for both Medicare and Medicaid.
