Phoenix police announce arrest in serial street shootings

They sifted through more than 3,000 tips before getting a lead about Saucedo.

Police said they investigated whether Saucedo might be the so-called Phoenix freeway shooter believed responsible for nearly 12 incidents, none fatal, on I-10 in 2015. Two new murders are linked to the investigation.

Saucedo was first taken into custody on April 19 for the murder of 61-year-old Raul Romero, who was shot multiple times on August 16, 2015 in the driveway of his home, according to ABC15.

Police gave few details on how they linked Saucedo to the killings and they did not say why the attacks stopped last July.

A survivor of one shooting told News 12 that after police showed up at his home with photos, he recognized Saucedo's face.

Police at the Monday press conference said evidence collected during the string of Phoenix freeway shootings helped to identify Saucedo as a person of interest in the street shootings.

"We hope that our community will rest a little easier and that our officers will get a little more sleep knowing that the wheels of justice are finally in motion", Williams said.

Police are still determining a motive, and have not found correlations between most of the victims and Saucedo. The 23-year-old serial killing suspect accused of fatally shooting seven people last year and wounding two others in attacks that terrorized a largely Latino Phoenix neighborhood was arrested Monday, May 8, 2017, authorities said.

His case was ultimately thrown out however, but investigators still believe he's the culprit. "But my son is not coming back", Castro said.

Smith said she had grown frustrated over the past year as detectives kept her in the dark about the investigation.

Nobody was killed in those shootings, in which about a dozen vehicles on the interstate outside the city were shot between August 29 and September 10. "The fact of them finding somebody, at least it was some type of news", she said. The suspect struck again the next day but didn't kill anyone.

In the most deadly single attack, two women and a 12-year-old girl were shot to death in front of a home before dawn on June 12, 2016, police said.

"I'm happy my kids are going to be able to walk outside and I won't have to fear that they're going to get shot", Pastrana said.
