Si Woo Kim becomes youngest winner of Players Championship

He shot -3 on the day and -10 for the tournament, earning himself a $1.9 million payday, and in the process, earning himself a five-year exemption on tour as well.

He's the youngest-ever victor of The Players Championship and didn't take any chances on that back nine.

"I can now plan a schedule and enjoy my golf".

All week during The Players Championship, the media talked about the heavy hitters.

Scott was the previous youngest victor in the US PGA Tour's flagship event in 2004, when he won aged 23 years, 8 months, and 12 days, while Kim doesn't celebrate his 22nd birthday until June 28.

"I still can't believe that I'm the champion and I'm the youngest champion for this championship", said Kim.

"I wasn't nervous at all because I was leading", Kim said. Intrigue inevitably and instantly shifted towards whether doctors will deem the 28-year-old fit enough to compete in the forthcoming BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

"He's gone clean out there today, which is extremely impressive under that pressure", Poulter said. Holmes and Kyle Stanley.

J. B. Holmes, left, and his caddie Brandon Parsons, look at the fifth fairway during the final round of The Players Championship golf tournament Sunday, May 14, 2017, in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. Holmes plummeted 40 spots to a tie for 41st at 3-over par.

Stanley was nine shots lower than his playing partner, but a 75 still dropped him into a tie for fourth at 6-under with Rafael Cabrera Bello - who had one of the most sensational finishes in Players history when he made the first double-eagle at the par-5 16th hole, and added a birdie at No. 17.

It has been a torrid time for the Englishman over the last 18 months but this week he showed he remains capable of excellent golf even with a relatively cold putter. Stupid bogeys on 13 and 14.

"It's just the way this course is now with this kind of grass and also the wind being a big factor the last couple days, " said Adam Scott, who tied for sixth.

It was the worst finish by a 54-hole leader in tournament history, a record that previously belonged to Graeme McDowell (2011) and Alex Cejka (2009), who both shot 79. Friday's 36-hole cut at 2-over 146 was the highest at The Players since 2008. Going by such a calm approach - Kim made nine straight pars on the back nine on Sunday - further glory awaits.

It's true that Kim hasn't had a great season (he had just one top 10 coming into this week to go with seven missed cuts and four WDs), but he's clearly shown signs of being a stud as evidenced by those multiple wins before turning 22. He had not posted a top-10 since a tie for 10th in the Tour's event in Malaysia last October, his first start of the wrap-around season. But his smooth swing looked back on point while manoeuvring around TPC Sawgrass' risky layout.

Kim was also the fourth different leader at the of each round, proving once again this course tested every golfer's abilities.

An opening 69 raised his hopes. "However, I really could feel that my shot was feeling good". During the crucial stretch on the back nine of the Players Stadium Course, Kim never faced a par putt longer than 2 feet.

"To have two, three weeks ago been in a position where I wasn't playing THE PLAYERS and potentially didn't have a card to play", Poulter said, "and was looking to write nice letters to Jack for Memorial and all of those great tournaments that I'd like to play in - things change pretty quick with good golf, and that's what I've done this week". He never got flustered, and he never stepped outside the zone he seemed to exist in throughout the final 36 holes.
