Tesla Tiles To Slide Down Under

Tesla Tiles To Slide Down Under

They'll go to US customers first this year and to other countries next year. The "black glass smooth" and "textured" tiles will be available first, and the company will begin selling the "Tuscan" and "French slate" tiles in six months, he said.

Musk explains that the use of traditional solar and backup batteries in roofing is less expensive that using a typical roof. Tesla is very confident about their product and has announced a lifetime warranty it for the buyers. A glass tile, without the solar elements costs $11 per square foot, and the solar tiles themselves are $42 per square foot.

The company's blog says, "Solar energy has always been part of our master plan, and we recognized the need for a roof that is simultaneously affordable, durable, handsome and integrated with battery storage".

Musk described the roof to reporters as a critical step toward a world that runs on sustainable energy.

If you hook those solar tiles up to a Powerwall, too, you'll be storing that generated electricity to use later when the sun is not shining. From most viewing angles, the slick shingles looked like standard roof materials, but they allowed light to pass through from above onto a solar cell embedded beneath the tempered surface.

Installations in the U.S. will be carried out by Tesla's SolarCity arm however there is no indication as to how United Kingdom installs will be conducted, or whether installers will be able to purchase the roof tiles from Tesla directly.

Production will begin at Tesla's Fremont solar plant in California and then shift to its new factory in Buffalo, New York, with additional investments from Tesla's partner, Panasonic.

Tesla Australia have published a blog post detailing the benefits users can expect from a solar roof, most notable the ability to turn sunlight into power without an electricity company.

Australian experts are doing analysis of the costs and how these roofs will fit into the roofing market Down Under, Gizmodo Australia reports. However, for many homes the initial cost of the roof remains considerable.

Tesla will soon begin selling solar roof tiles that are created to look like a traditional roof and have the potential to power a home. Therefore, the percentage of the roof that will be covered by active solar cells will be higher, as will the total cost of the roof.

For more information about the new Tesla solar roof tiles, head over to the company's website. "A 30 percent premium could well be acceptable". Musk said at the unveiling that Tesla had established a new glass division and that it had worked with SolarCity to design the new solar product.
