Trump Promises Israel-Palestine Peace, But Offers No New Policies

"I heard President Abbas yesterday say that they teach their children peace", Netanyahu said, quoting Abbas's statement to the media made during a joint press event with US President Donald Trump.

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday indicated to his Palestinian counterpart Mahmoud Abbas the US won't tolerate the Palestinian Authority handing out cash to families of terrorists guilty of murdering Israelis. "We have been deeply rooted to our land for 3,000 years and we will continue to settle the land", Hotovely said.

Mr Abbas, 82, who was among the negotiators on hand for the historic signing of the Oslo Accords on the White House lawn in 1993, indicated that he did feel optimistic that almost a quarter-century later, Mr Trump might be the president who finally builds on that initial agreement to forge a final resolution to the conflict.

The hunger strike is led by imprisoned uprising leader Marwan Barghouti, widely seen as the most popular choice to succeed the 82-year-old Abbas one day. "Trump can't achieve anything here beyond cocktail chatter with Israelis and Palestinians diplomats", she said.

"It was not clear why the president deleted the tweet about his visit with Abbas".

Hamas on Monday released a policy document slightly softening its stance on Israel, calling for a sovereign Palestinian state along pre-1967 lines with the return of refugees to their homes in Israel.

In his interview with CNN, Mashaal said that Trump has a "historic opportunity" to find an "equitable solution" for the Palestinian people.

Trump did not address Israeli settlements in the West Bank, which he had asked the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to halt, nor did he address the terrorist group Hamas, which controls Gaza and earlier this week opened the door to at least a temporary deal for a Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders.

"We believe that we are capable and able to bring about success to our efforts because, President Trump, you have the determination and you have the desire to see it become to fruition and to become successful". Being shunned by the US would undercut Abbas' remaining political legitimacy just as polls show two-thirds of Palestinians want him to resign.

A few minutes later as a Cabinet Room lunch got underway, Trump, who was flanked by Vice President Mike Pence and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, told Abbas that achieving the peace pact is "maybe not as hard as people have thought over the years".

He was referring to the likelihood that Trump would make good on his threat to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

However, they expect that more pressure would be exerted on the Palestinian side to make concessions, in terms of the way Trump Administration may handle the peace negotiations.

The last peace talks between Israel and Palestine, sponsored by the United States, lasted nine months and broke down in April 2014 over their deep differences on the issue of settlement building. "That would be like asking Israel to stop paying its soldiers".

On Wednesday, Ahmad Majdalan, a senior PLO official said in an interview on Israel Radio that in May 2014, Israeli negotiator Yitzchak Molcho, chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat and U.S. secretary of state John Kerry signed a document allowing the Palestinians to pay terrorists.

Trump's administration is widely perceived as staunchly pro-Israel and the acknowledgment of the Palestinians was welcomed by Ghassan Khatib, a professor of political science at Birzeit University in the West Bank.
