'Trumpcare' bill set to hurt Republicans

When the House passed the American Health Care Act by a slim margin on Thursday, Republican lawmakers made their way to the White House for a celebration.

Even though the Senate still has to act, Republicans now largely own a measure that would curtail, and in some cases take away completely, benefits Americans have embraced after seven years.

The House bill has Americans in an uproar over its negative aspects, such as older people facing higher costs and 14 million people losing their insurance in the first year.

"That is an important issue to me because I don't think that low-income women should be denied their choice of health care providers, for family planning, cancer screenings, for well women care (but) it's not the only issue in this huge bill", she said.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell seems to not be backing a total re-write of the bill.

He is also promising that the American Health Care Act will be a big league bargain for consumers. They did an impressive job of moving the bill toward their position, but what nearly all of them voted for Thursday was still considerably short of what their ideal bill would have been.

The House bill, passed 217-213, would end the health care law's fines on people who don't buy policies and erase its taxes on health industry businesses and higher-earning people.

Critics also point to other flaws that existed in the previous risk pool system, including long wait lists and abrupt discontinuation of coverage due to individual states' inability to predict health costs for patients who require expensive treatments. "We shouldn't jeopardize health coverage for any of the 130 million Americans with pre-existing conditions for the sake of politics", said Emily Gee, Health Economist at CAP.

Twenty Republicans, none of whom were from California, voted against the bill, as did Carbajal and each of his fellow Democrats.

Rep. David Brat, a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus who refrained from supporting the AHCA until amendments were added, told USA Today's Eliza Collins he wants to see the AHCA as it stands now to get to Trump's desk.

"The House bill is not going to come before us", she said. Kim raised more than $43,000 online over the last week for a possible run.

"He owns every part of this", Kim said of MacArthur.

The CBO said the original version, pulled from the House floor back in March, would have reduced the number of insured Americans by an estimated 24 million; we don't know whether this version will do better or worse.

Democrats aren't happy about the House Republican health care bill, but they are upbeat about the prospect of the measure serving as a millstone around GOP necks. Her open seat in Miami is considered a prime pick-up opportunity for Democrats.

Price said the changes will make sure that people who rely on Medicaid get the care and coverage that they need.

Outside groups prepared to launch an advertising campaign in the coming days to punish vulnerable Republicans in key states.

The House plan would make dramatic cuts to Medicaid by capping its funding as of 2020, and stop payments to states participating in Obamacare's expansion of the program.

The bill that passed the House of Representatives last week sparked celebrations among the GOP faithful, but its future is far from certain as it faces the political landmines of the Senate.

With Republicans controlling both chambers in Congress and the White House, the lingering question for them is not whether to repeal some provisions of the law but whether the Senate or House will hold sway on the details.

Outside Washington, the Trump resistance mobilized quickly.

That tax penalty would disappear under Republicans' plan, though it would return as a 30-percent premium surcharge on purchasing a new plan if the buyer went two or more months without coverage.

"There's already a lot more energy and engagement among Democratic voters, and this is going to put the enthusiasm gap on steroids for Democrats", said Democratic pollster Geoff Garin, who advises Priorities USA, a top liberal political organization. We might focus on the fact that Republicans are rushing to pass it without having held a single hearing on it, without a score from the Congressional Budget Office that would tell us exactly what the effects would be, and before almost anyone has had a chance to even look at the bill's actual text - all this despite the fact that they are remaking one-sixth of the American economy and affecting all of our lives (and despite their long and ridiculous claims that the Affordable Care Act was "rammed through" Congress, when in fact it was debated for an entire year and was the subject of dozens of hearings and endless public discussion).
