US Intelligence Chief warns of deteriorating security in Afghanistan

In addition, Coats said that "Russia is likely to be more aggressive in global affairs, more unpredictable in its approach to the United States".

Last month, a report - which included alleged satellite imagery and intelligence said to be provided by informants working covertly inside the Iranian military - indicated the Iranian regime is secretly, and illegally, developing weapons at its "off-limits" Parchin nuclear site.

And North Korea's statements that it needs nuclear weapons to survive suggest that Kim "does not intend to negotiate them away at any price", Coats said at a Senate intelligence hearing on worldwide threats.

Central Intelligence Agency has ten mission centers on regions or issues; center devoted to one country highly unusual On May 10, the Central Intelligence Agency announced the establishment of the Korea Mission Center, which is created to counter the threat posed by North Korea's nuclear weapons and missiles.

The U.S. intelligence community is comprised of 17 federal agencies.

Coats described the growing threat of Iran's missile program in a written testimony to the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence on Thursday. "The Taliban are likely to continue to make gains, especially in rural areas", said the U.S. spy chief, adding that efforts to bolster local military have been less fruitful than hoped.

Coats' report also says that Russian actors have conducted attacks on critical infrastructure networks, even going so far as to pretend to be third parties hiding behind false online personas.

Coats, a former senator from IN, was nominated as director of national intelligence IN January by the incoming president.

The deal lengthens the time it would take Iran to develop enough material for a nuclear weapon "from a few months to about a year", he said.

For the Trump Administration, facing a question whether to increase the U.S. troop levels in Afghanistan, this can't be good news.

But he said the USA doesn't know if Iran will eventually decide to try to build nuclear weapons. The performance of Afghan national security forces will worsen due to weak military leadership, desertions and combat casualties, he predicted.

"As part of the administration's goal of an effective and efficient government, we have already begun a review of the entire intelligence community, to include the office of the DNI", Coats said.

"Kabul's political dysfunction and ineffectiveness will nearly certainly be the greatest vulnerability to stability in 2017", he wrote.
