Bilbao's Valverde coy on Barcelona link

Ernesto Valverde says he is unable to confirm that he is in talks with Barcelona over becoming their new head coach.

The Mundo Deportivo newspaper reported this week that Valverde has already reached a two-year deal with Barcelona, with an option for a third season.

The Spanish giants are searching for a replacement for Luis Enrique, who announced at the start of March he would leave at season's end. The outgoing Athletic Bilbao boss admitted his agent has been approached by some clubs, amid suggestions Arsenal are also tracking his situation.

Enrique guides the Barca team for the final time on Saturday, May 27 in the Copa del Rey final against Alaves.

He previously coached Espanyol, Olympiakos, Villarreal and Valencia.

"The coach, accompanied by president Josu Urrutia, will hold a press conference on Wednesday, May 24 at 1200 (local time) at San Mames", a brief club statement read. When I first came here I thought I would only remain for two years.

"Ernesto Valverde has done a great job with Athletic Bilbao over the last few years", he said.

"Athletic is my club, first I say goodbye to them and then I'll think of another team".

"I am very happy and thankful for the chance the club has taken on me", he told the club's website.

"I feel my work here is done", Valverde said.

"I don't know what is being published, but I am responsible for my own honesty", he concluded.
