Confirmed death toll in London fire rises to 30

"It should define the leadership of May and she should be forced to resign", he said.

The 91-year-old monarch said it is "difficult to escape a very somber mood" on what is normally a day of celebration. "Put to the test, the United Kingdom has been resolute in the face of adversity".

In her traditional birthday message, the 91-year-old monarch made a reference to the "succession of bad tragedies", a day after she paid a visit to people affected by the massive Grenfell Tower blaze in west London that has claimed at least 30 lives.

The London Fire Brigade says that it does not expect to find any more survivors after the blaze.

"We need answers and we need answers now", another man said through a megaphone.

Cundy added that it will take weeks or longer to recover and identify all the dead in the public housing block that was devastated by a fire early Wednesday.

Protesters walk down Ladbroke Grove in west London.

The protesters barged their way through an automatic door at Kensington and Chelsea council town hall and sought to gain entry to an upper floor.

Dozens of demonstrators surged towards the entrance and there were scuffles outside as organisers appealed for calm.

May had been criticized for refusing to meet any residents or their families during a Thursday visit to the site, reportedly due to "security concerns".

The Government has pledged to cover "further expenses" for the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire, on top of the £5 million already promised.

"Government is making money available, we're ensuring that we're going to get to the bottom of what's happened, we will ensure that people are rehoused".

"We are here today because you must look at that building with tears streaming down your face", one woman said as they neared the foot of the tower.

But the visits, which took place more than 48 hours after the devastating fire broke out, have done little to quell the growing anger over the way she has dealt with the tragedy.

For resident Soran Karimi, 31, who lives in the block opposite, it was nothing short of "murder" and "people should be prosecuted for this".

Families searching for information about their loved ones have, meanwhile, blanketed the area near the tower with posters searching for answers.

On Friday, hundreds of mourners stood arm in arm at a vigil in west London and held a two-minute silence for the victims of the fire.

London police said an investigation, led by a detective from its homicide and major crime unit, would examine whether criminal offences had been committed although they said there was nothing to suggest the fire was started deliberately.
