Conservatives are only party who can form a United Kingdom government-May

Theresa May has announced that she will form a minority government with the support of the DUP after seeking permission from the Queen.

Meanwhile, Labour has made 29 gains with the Conservatives losing 13 seats.

Asked whether Brexit negotiations should be delayed, Corbyn told Sky News: "They're going to have to go ahead because Article 50 has been invoked".

Mr Hammond, 61, was named Chancellor of The exchequer by Mrs May shortly after she took over as prime minister almost a year ago, in the wake of Britain's decision to leave the European Union.

However, May's decision to call a snap vote backfired, casting uncertainty on the approach taken in those negotiations. At that point, polls predicted she would massively increase the slim majority she had inherited from David Cameron.

"I have just been to see Her Majesty the Queen, and I will now form a government - a government that can provide certainty and lead Britain forward at this critical time for our country".

Mrs May has faced calls to quit from within her own party, with Anna Soubry saying she should consider her position after a "disastrous" campaign and Nigel Evans saying "things needs to change" in her dealings with the party.

She is regarded as having performed well during the campaign, which was marred by deadly attacks in Manchester and London. This did not help May, who, in her previous role as interior miniser for six years, had overseen cuts in the number of police officers. What they are saying "I'm afraid we ran a pretty awful campaign", - *Conservative member of parliament Anna Soubry, who called on Theresa May to "consider her position". She sought to deflect pressure onto Corbyn, arguing he had a weak record on security matters.

However, some say the Prime Minister would soon be gone.

That would make the course of Brexit even harder to predict.

Hailing what he called an "incredible result" for his party, Mr Corbyn declared: "We are ready to serve this country". "What tonight is about is the rejection of Theresa May's version of extreme Brexit", - Keir Starmer, Labour's Brexit policy chief. Analsysis suggests Labour benefitted from a strong turnout among young voters.

As her party had secured the greatest number of seats, Mrs May said it was clear that only the Tories and the Unionist Party had "the legitimacy and ability to provide that certainty by commanding a majority in the House of Commons".
