Mickelson to skip US Open for daughter's graduation

Phil Mickelson's quest to complete a career grand slam seems certain to have to wait another year after his decision to skip the U.S. Open in two weeks' time.

Phil Mickelson has announced that he will miss this year's US Open to attend his daughter's High School graduation.

Mickelson hasn't officially withdrawn from the U.S. Open, which starts June 15 at Erin Hills in Wisconsin.

The left-hander produced one of the best performances of his career to win his fifth major at The Open in 2013, but his memorable triumph at Muirfield remains his last victory worldwide.

Now, he'll mostly likely be watching on television.

"And I always think about that at the U.S. Open, I think about Payne Stewart (who died later that year in a plane crash) and I can't believe how quickly time has gone by".

"There is no sense in doing it (withdrawing formally) now".

"I don't know what will happen, but it doesn't look very good". I wanted to make sure they [the USGA] had enough notice to accommodate it, so that's why I'm saying something today.

He said Amanda is the school president and the valedictorian.

"We certainly understand and support that Phil's family commitments are of paramount importance, and hope that the timing will work in his favour".

Mickelson, a 42-time PGA TOUR victor, five-time major victor and six-time U.S. Open runner up, will nearly certainly withdraw from the only major championship he has failed to win.

With his wife, Amy, due any day, Mickelson competed in the 1999 U.S. Open at Pinehurst and contended he with would leave the tournament if she went into labor with Amanda. You just need to be there.
