New poll shows possible defeat for Theresa May

In recent weeks the polls have shown the gap between the parties is closing with a YouGov poll for the Times this week cutting the Tory lead to just three points.

Britain's Prime Minister, and Leader of the Conservative party, Theresa May, speaks during a general election campaign event in Wolverhampton, central England, on May 30, 2017, as campaigning continues in the build up to the general election on June 8.

When May stunned politicians and financial markets on April 18 with her call for a snap election, opinion polls suggested she could emulate Margaret Thatcher's 1983 majority of 144 seats or even threaten Tony Blair's 1997 Labour majority of 179 seats.

May called the election three years early in a bid to strengthen her slender majority in parliament going into the Brexit talks.

Meanwhile, a separate YouGov model based on different data estimated the Conservatives would win 317 seats, nine short of an overall majority of 326 seats.

European stocks rose for the first time in five days, led by gains in construction companies, as United Kingdom equities extended gains after a poll showed the Conservative Party was more likely to win next week's general election. But her Conservative Party remained on 43 percent according to a survey conducted by Survation for ITV's Good Morning Britain programme, seeing their lead drop as support for Labour rose 3 percentage points to 37 percent.

However, the model - based on 50,000 interviews over one week - has a very wide margin of error, saying the Conservatives could get anywhere between 274 and 345 seats, meaning they could also increase their majority.

In contrast to YouGov's model, other projections suggested May would win soundly.

May, an opponent of exiting the European Union who won the top job in the political chaos following the shock June 23 Brexit vote, used a speech on Thursday in northern England to pitch her vision of Brexit.

"We shouldn't write off the thought that young people will turn out for this election (in large numbers) - but I think it's unlikely", Boon said.

The Tories may not have appreciated just what a poor campaigner they had in Mrs May while many will have underestimated Jeremy Corbyn who has performed well on the campaign trail.

At that time, a YouGov poll pointed toward another Conservative majority.

YouGov chief executive Stephan Shakespeare said the data could change dramatically between now and June 8.

But the 20-point opinion poll lead of the time is now into single figures. May could actually lose seats on her party's 2015 General Election results, dealing a massive blow to her and her ability to negotiate on a Brexit deal in the immediate aftermath of the election.
