North Korea 'most urgent' threat to security - Mattis

Amid North Korea's claims, the United States is focusing on the possibility of North Korea's ICBM launch taking place this year.

"The US is feeling uneasy as this might be proven in practice".

"The strategic weapons tests conducted by the DPRK clearly proved that the time of its ICBM test is not a long way off at all", the piece went on.

President Trump has vowed that North Korea will never be allowed to field a nuclear capable ICBM, but there has been little action to enforce this statement.

"The relationship is in a far more complicated and hard situation than when I was in office 10 years ago but I don't think it is supposed to be assessed whether it's going well or not at this point".

South Korea said it has recovered a crashed North Korean drone that was spying on a controversial US -built missile system that is being deployed in the country.

South Korea is hosting the anti-missile defence system in the Seongju region, about 250 km (155 miles) from the North Korean border as part of efforts to counter a growing missile threat from the North.

North Korea says it will not give up on its nuclear deterrence unless Washington ends its hostile policy toward Pyongyang and dissolves the US-led United Nations command in South Korea.

The trial will take place at the Kodiak test site in Alaska, where the system will face a target similar in behavior to the advanced Iranian ballistic missiles. While some of the tests have displayed new capabilities - like hitting warships in the Sea of Japan - they have all involved short or intermediate-range missiles that could reach no farther than Guam in the Pacific Ocean.

Meanwhile, North Korea has ignored all calls to halt its programs, and has continued to test the patience of Washington and its Asian neighbors.

Later on Tuesday, the South's military said a North Korean soldier defected to the South across their heavily mined border, known as the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).

Trump has taken a hard line on Kim's kingdom as the tubby tyrant continues his quest for nuclear weapons - with bomb tests and missile launches.

But he slammed a subsequent missile launch as a "reckless provocation".

Stored on the chip were ten photos of the USA missile defense system THAAD stationed some 270 kilometers from the inter-Korean border.
