President Trump will announce his decision on the Paris Accord Thursday

Tesla chief executive Elon Musk threatened Wednesday to resign his position as an adviser to President Donald Trump if the United States withdraws from the Paris climate deal, a remark that highlights Trump's precarious position in a high-stakes global standoff.

Trump said in a Twitter post on Wednesday night that he would make the announcement at 3 p.m. EDT (1900 GMT) on Thursday in the White House Rose Garden, ending his tweet with "MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"

"There is now significant global momentum behind the Paris Agreement, because more and more countries see climate action as a positive pathway to faster development, innovation, energy security, improved public health and greater competitiveness in a globalised economy", the United Nations environment head said.

The Trump administration has already made clear that it does not value expertise, and its proposed budget would make it more hard for the U.S.to possess and develop information that ought to inform our collective response to this pressing issue.

Economists also warn that climate change could inflict a devastating impact on the global economy.

A White House official told The Associated Press on Wednesday that Trump is expected to withdraw from the deal, though aides cautioned he had not yet made a final decision.

Abandoning the pact would isolate the US from a raft of worldwide allies who spent years negotiating the 2015 agreement to fight global warming and pollution by reducing carbon emissions.

"There are no indications whether the United States will stay in the Paris Agreement or not", Merkel said.

Finnish Prime Minister Juha Sipila (JOO'-hah SEE'-pah-lah) says climate change won't be reversed "by closing your eyes".

"We are concerned but we (have) chose to implement. and we will join forces with other parties, especially with China, to develop further cooperation on climate and energy", Canete said in an interview during a trip to Denmark.

Throughout the 2016, Trump promised to leave the agreement if he were elected President. The deal relies heavily on reductions in emissions by big polluter nations, and the United States is the world's second-biggest carbon dioxide emitter behind China.

"We will continue to lead", the mayors said in a statement.

Since taking office on January 20, Trump has sent contradictory signals on the Paris deal - reflecting the different currents within his administration, both on climate change but also on the wider issue of America's role in the world and its position on multilateralism.

Chinese and European Union leaders are set to agree a joint statement on the Paris climate agreement, saying it is "an imperative more important than ever".

The EU and China have reportedly signed an agreement to counteract any action by the United States which might undermine the Paris agreement.
