Rep. Steve Scalise, others reported shot at practice for Congressional Baseball Game

WASHINGTON (AP) - House Majority Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana was shot Wednesday at a congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia, congressional officials say.

While we don't yet know the full scale of the casualties this morning, we do know that this attack would have been inestimably worse without the presence of the fearless men and women of the Capitol Police, some of whom are among the wounded.

House Speaker Paul Ryan's office said Scalise's wounds were not believed to be life-threatening and that a member of a security detail was also shot.

Trump says in a televised statement from the White House that while the political parties may have their differences, it's worth remembering that everyone who serves in Washington is here because they love the United States.

Kentucky Sen. Randding to both congressional and law enforcement sources, the shooting appears to be a "deliberate attack".

President Donald Trump said in a statement that he and Vice President Mike Pence were aware of the shooting and are "saddened by this tragedy".

"America is praying for you and America is praying for all of the victims of this bad shooting", Mr. Trump said at the White House.

Five people, including the suspect, were transported to a local hospital.

Scalise was undergoing surgery at a nearby hospital.

Brooks said he then wondered if it was a double-shooter situation.

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) was among those shot on Wednesday morning.

A group of Republicans were practicing ahead of an annual baseball game held between Democrats and Republicans.

Brooks also said the shooter shot two officers working protective detail for the Congress members at the event. "Thank you to the Capitol Police officers who demonstrated incredible courage, and by their quick action saved lives", he said. "Our courageous police, our congressional aides, who work so tirelessly behind the scenes with enormous devotion, and our dedicated members of Congress who represent our people".

Rep. Mark Walker, R-N.C., said in a statement the gunman wanted to "kill as many Republican members as possible". Alexandria police said a suspect was taken into custody and "not a threat".

"I heard a gunshot and I yelled to Trent, 'That was a gun!' And Trent looks over, he says, 'It's a shooter, '" Palmer said.
