Russia urges Donald Trump to discard 'Cold War' policy on Cuba

Below is the full statement released Friday by the Cuban government. "They only enrich the Cuban regime", Trump said.

President Trump last Friday ordered tighter restrictions on Americans traveling to Cuba and prohibitions on America's business dealing with Cuba's military, rolling back parts of former president Barack Obama's Cuba policy, saying that easing of restrictions on travel and trade does not help the Cuban people.

"The new policy makes clear that the primary obstacle to the Cuban people's prosperity and economic freedom is the Cuban military's practice of controlling virtually every profitable sector of the economy", the White House said in announcing the policy shift. "US policy must support that right".

The city is home to the largest Cuban diaspora in the USA, many of whom are highly critical of President Barack Obama's re-establishment of ties with the Cuban government. The Directive also conceded that the blockade is an obsolete policy and that it should be lifted.

Representative Tom Emmer of Minnesota believes the new policy will "hurt the United States economy, making it hard for the country's farmers to enter new markets and cutting the grass under the feet of the tourism and manufacturing industries".

The measures announced impose additional obstacles to the already very limited opportunities that the USA business sector had in order to trade with and invest in Cuba.

Yes, this is the same Donald Trump who declared as president-elect in December that his incoming administration would "pursue a new foreign policy that finally learns from the mistakes of the past".

"I have continued to press both the Obama and Trump Administrations for the return of Joanne Chesimard, and am pleased that the president today made her return - in clear and absolute terms, as I have insisted - contingent upon any further US engagement in Cuba".

Later on, we shall make a deeper analysis of the scope and implications of the announcement. While seeming like small rollbacks, they may actually have a large effect, as the Armed Forces Business Enterprises Group has a wide reach in the Cuban economy so that it is hard for USA businesses to avoid dealing with it in some capacity.

The Government of Cuba rejects political manipulation and double standards in human rights. Officially, 535,000 Cubans, around 10 percent of the population, are "self-employed" and no longer work in state jobs, though possibly several hundred thousand are in the same category informally. The mentioned changes would also not take effect immediately.

A requirement that the president submit regular reports to Congress addressing the coordination of sanctions between the USA and European Union for activity related to weapons of mass destruction, worldwide terrorism or human rights abuses. The new legislation focuses on other activities of concern with respect to United States national security and foreign policy, including Iran's ballistic weapons development activity, support for global terrorism, and human rights abuses.

Marselha Margerin of Amnesty International noted that Trump recently traveled to Saudi Arabia, where he lavished its leaders with praise and signed a huge military deal but ignored their flagrant human rights abuses. She didn't have the income to upgrade the outdated fixtures or replace sagging furniture.

But, facing pressure from US businesses and even some fellow Republicans to avoid turning back the clock completely in relations with Cuba, the president chose to leave intact some of his Democratic predecessor's steps toward normalization. The island nation will never negotiate its independence and sovereignty, the Cuban foreign minister said. Cuba has not renounced these principles, nor will it ever do so. In a statement on state television it denounced the measures, but said Havana "reiterates its willingness to continue the respectful dialogue and cooperation".

"It was a grotesque spectacle straight from the Cold War", Rodriguez said in Vienna, during a tour of European countries, in a news conference broadcast live in Cuba. Many Americans have headed there again since detente to soak up its historic atmosphere.
