Saina, Praneeth reach Thailand Open quarters

Indian shuttlers Saina Nehwal and B Sai Praneeth stormed into the semi-finals of the $1,20,000 Thailand Open Grand Prix badminton tournament with contrasting wins in the women's and men's singles quarter-finals, respectively, here on Friday.

In the quarterfinal match, he defeated Kantaphon Wangcharoen 21-16, 21-17. In women's singles, national champion Rituparna Das lost 19-21, 18-21 to top seed Ratchanok Intanon, while Sri Krishna Priya Kudaravalli was disposed off 14-21, 12-21 by Ruselli Hartawan of Indonesia and Yen Mei Ho of Malaysia staved off a challenge from Saili Rane 19-21, 21-13, 21-12.

India had a mix day at Thailand Open as London Olympic silver medallist Saina Nehwal's campaign ended in the semifinal match against Thailand's Busanan Ongbamrungphan 19-21 18-21 in 53 minutes.




While Saina made some unforced errors in the first game at crucial moments, she tried to fight back in the second. Sai Praneeth led from the start and it was only a matter of minutes before he closed the game in his favour.

Saina and Praneeth are the only two Indians left in the tournament. Sai Praneeth, though, was determined to not take the match into the decider and found legs to clinch the next seven points and take a 10-3 lead. From there on, he did not let his Thai opponent make a recovery and won the game comfortably. He had managed to win seven consecutive points. Saina wrote on her twitter handle after the win.
