Seattle police release tape of pregnant woman's shooting

Kenny Isabell, pastor of The Way of Holiness Church of God in Seattle, said 30-year-old Charleena Lyles was pregnant and some of her four other children were inside the apartment during the Sunday shooting.

According to a police account of the incident, Lyles pulled out a knife when officers responded to the call.

Lyles' sister, Monika Williams, questioned the officers' use of force: "Why couldn't they have tased her?" Within 10 seconds, there are sounds of a possible scuffle or rapid movement, and the officers shout "Get back!"

Ms Lyles had threatened officers with long metal shears after they responded to a domestic disturbance at her home.

Family members also told the Seattle Times that they believe race was a factor - Lyle is black, and the officers present during the shooting were both white.

Before entering her apartment, officers can be heard on audio recording saying Charleena had been "talking all insane about how the officers weren't gonna leave". They asked her about the video game console she reporting stolen. "I could have taken her down". The officers will be placed on paid administrative leave during the investigation, the police department said in its statement.

Under the agreement with the Justice Department, Seattle police adopted a new policy dictating that uses of force by officers must be reasonable, necessary and proportional to the threat or urgency of the situation. It is when we hear her invite the officers to look around the apartment that some type of struggle is heard.

The officer safety tag, however, required that two officers respond to her call instead of one, which is more typical.

In a tragic turn of events, an African-American woman who had called the cops for help at her home was shot down by the officers in front of her children.

Charleena Lyles was shot Sunday morning.

Officer 2: Has she got a mental caution on her?

In the audio recording, the responding officers can be heard talking about previous encounters with Lyles.

Murray said what happened to Lyles makes her fear for the others still out there in similar circumstances, she said Lyles is not alone.

The statement provided by the Seattle police department said both officers were "equipped with less lethal force options", and that all its officers are trained in crisis intervention. Jamieson said Lyles had a pair of scissors during the previous encounter.

"The officers immediately performed first aid", but medics arrived and determined she had died, the Police Department said.

The shooting is under investigation, but family members are angry that police didn't use less deadly means to subdue Lyles, whom they described as "tiny", the Times reported.

Lyles was also reportedly three months pregnant when she was shot.

"Wait, is this the one with like the three kids?" one cop can be heard asking. As a 2016 report from the Ruderman Family Foundation points out, disabled people and people with mental health issues make up half of all those killed by police.

Attorney James Bible said Tuesday that family members are heartbroken and hurting over the death of 30-year-old Charleena Lyles, a pregnant mother of four other children.

Seattle's Mayor Ed Murray said the incident was a "tragedy for all involved and will be fully investigated".
