Tennessee man: Fugitive inmates surrendered without a word

Two inmates accused of shooting to death a pair of armed guards during an escape from a prison bus in Georgia were captured Thursday night in Tennessee, authorities said.

During the almost three minute call, a man, who along with his wife had been taken hostage, had just broken free after being held captive by Donnie Rowe and Ricky Dubose.

"We were tied up, we just got loose", he told the dispatcher after saying he was unsure what direction the suspects traveled in.

"They will be brought to justice swiftly for their heinous crime against our Officers", he said, also expressing gratitude to all of the law enforcement officers who provided support and assistance in the search for the two men.

Reports that a home owner held the escaped convicts at gun point are incorrect.

The men remained on the concrete until police arrived, which he said happened within three minutes.

Two Tennessee men are being hailed as heroes for helping authorities capture a pair of murderous fugitives - by holding the duo at gunpoint until deputies arrived.

Rowe, 43, and Dubose, 24, along with 31 other prisoners were headed to the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison, some 45 miles west of Eatonton, which is about half way between Atlanta and Augusta.

Rowe and Dubose were booked into the Rutherford County jail in Murfreesboro.

"I'm sure (the keys) were left" in the truck, Sills said.

While they were on the run, the pair allegedly stole five vehicles, robbed two homes, tied up and terrorized an elderly couple; and led police on a chase where speeds reached 100 miles per hour, officials said.

Rowe and Dubose attempted to steal a auto from the home when the homeowner heard the noise, walked outside, and caught them. The inmates got into a wreck, left the vehicle and then led police on a foot chase before both men were taken into custody in the community of Christiana, she said.

A 10-mile chase ensued on Interstate 24 south of Nashville when law enforcement officers saw the stolen vehicle.

Two of the sheriff's office vehicles, with deputies inside, were fired upon during the pursuit, said Dan Goodwin of the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office.

"True bravery is what's caused us to stand before you tonight to talk about a successful capture instead of a tragic incident", Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Director Mark Gwyn said.

Around noon, Bedford County Sheriff Austin Swing said an abandoned auto was found on a highway that appeared to be covered up with branches.

Dubose and Rowe quietly crossed state lines between Wednesday and Thursday before they ditched the stolen truck in Moore County, Tennessee.

Monica and Billue worked at Baldwin State Prison as transfer sergeants. Monica had been with the Georgia Department of Corrections since October 2009 and Billue since July 2007.

Rowe was serving a sentence of up to life in prison for armed robbery and aggravated assault in a 2001 case.
