Three US soldiers killed in Afghanistan: Pentagon

The Afghan army soldier opened fire and killed the Americans, according to USA and Afghan officials.

"We can confirm personnel from the Afghan National Defence and Security Forces were killed and wounded during overnight operations in Helmand province".

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation forces in Kabul declined to immediately comment on the killings, saying only that they were aware of an incident in eastern Afghanistan. "We will release more information when appropriate", Douglas High, the public affairs officer for Operation Resolute Support, the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation mission in Afghanistan, said in an email statement to The Post.

The attack took place in the Achin district where USA special forces have been fighting alongside Afghan troops against Islamic State and Taliban militants, said Attahullah Khogyani, a spokesman for the provincial governor in Nangarhar province.

Trump is at his golf course in Bedminster, New Jersey.Vice President Mike Pence, speaking at an event in Milwaukee, briefly addressed the attack.

Several American servicemen have been killed and injured after coming under fire in a "green-on-blue" attack in eastern Afghanistan, the Pentagon has announced. The President and I have been briefed, the details of this attack are forthcoming.

The Taliban, in a statement, took credit for the attack, according to the SITE Intel Group. "We will release more information when appropriate", it added. Although military officials say the group is far smaller than it was at its height in 2015, an estimated 600 to 800 militants, located mainly in remote mountainous areas, continue to pose an ample threat to US and Afghan troops. "Our hopes and prayers are with their families".

The Afghan forces are busy conducting counter-terrorism operations to eliminate the militants affiliated with the ISIS terrorist group in Nangarhar province.

Dubbed the "Mother Of All Bombs", the GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast was unleashed in combat for the first time April 12, hitting IS positions in a remote area of eastern Nangarhar province.

The incident in Helmand, like the one in Nangarhar, involved US forces working in partnership with Afghan commandos, but there was no indication that the incidents were connected.

The deployment of some 300 Marines to the poppy-growing province came as the Trump administration seeks to craft a new strategy in Afghanistan.

Currently, there are about 8,400 USA troops and another 5,000 North Atlantic Treaty Organisation forces in Afghanistan to train and assist Afghan forces against the Taliban and conduct counter-terrorism missions.

Three American soldiers were killed by an Afghan army commando who opened fire on them following an operation in eastern Afghanistan.

The policemen were on patrol too close to a Taliban base ahead of the attack, Afghan officials told AFP.
