United Kingdom election: Brexit plans in disarray

Bloodied by an election gamble that backfired and triggered calls for her resignation, Prime Minister Theresa May on Friday stood by her vow to form Britain s next government and lead the country out of the European Union.

In an article for the Conservative Home website, Timothy conceded that the campaign had failed to communicate "Theresa's positive plan for the future", and to notice surging support for the opposition Labour Party.

Britain's best-selling Sun newspaper said senior members of her party had vowed to get rid of May, but would wait at least six months because they were anxious that a leadership contest now could propel Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn into power.

With all but one seat declared, the Conservatives have fallen short of a majority in the Commons, and will need the DUP's support.

If confirmed, the result will be humiliating for May, who called a snap election in the hope of increasing her majority and strengthening Britain's hand in exit talks with the European Union.

"If the poll is anything like accurate, this is completely catastrophic for the Conservatives and for Theresa May", former Treasury chief George Osborne told ITV. Northern Ireland voted against leaving Europe, and May's Irish partners will nearly certainly demand concessions in return for their support. "It's too early in the night to be drawing conclusions".

Since the election, most of the members of May's cabinet have kept quiet on the issue of her future, adding to speculation that her days as prime minister are numbered.

Chris Leslie labelled it an "okay result" after Jeremy Corbyn's party secured a higher-than-expected 262 seats and significantly boosted its vote share.

In 2014, the Scottish referendum, conclusive as it appeared to be in its rejection of independence, served to further embolden Scottish nationalists.

Results will come in overnight for all 650 seats in the House of Commons.

"She's staying, for now", one Conservative Party source told Reuters.

Last Saturday, three assailants mowed down pedestrians and launched a stabbing rampage around London Bridge, killing eight people before being shot dead by police. Two weeks earlier, a suicide bomber killed 22 people as they were leaving a concert in Manchester, and five people died during a vehicle and knife attack near Parliament on March 22.

The general election resulted in Britain's first hung parliament, when the Conservative Party led by Arthur Balfour received the largest number of votes.

"I don't think throwing us into a leadership battle at this moment in time, when we are about to launch into these hard negotiations, would be in the best interests of the country", Evans said. "It was very scary on Saturday".

The small Northern Ireland party that will play a key role in the new British government will be holding talks with Prime Minister Theresa May as she puts together a minority government.

A new poll was called in 1997 - which saw former Labour PM Tony Blair win a landslide victory.

"We are ready. We have completed the guidelines, the framework", Merkel said Friday in Mexico City.

Ahead of the election Corbyn offered United Kingdom voters the most left-wing, big government policy agenda for almost 40 years - and crucially an end to seven years of Conservative "austerity" policies and campaigning on promises to push for better funding for health and education. Some say her failure means the government must now take a more flexible approach to the divorce.
