UPS issues statement on incident at San Francisco facility

When they found the gunman, he put the weapon to his head and shot himself.

San Francisco police are still trying to determine why a UPS driver shot and killed three co-workers before turning the gun on himself Wednesday at a package sorting and delivery center.

UPS said that there are 350 people who work in the building that is situated between Utah and San Bruno between 16th and 17th Streets.

Steve Gaut, a UPS spokesman said the shooter was a driver and in uniform.

San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee called the shooting a "senseless act of violence" and said that the victims and their families are in his prayers.

UPS spokesman Kyle Peterson released a statement saying there had been an incident inside the company's San Francisco facility.

Officers responded to a report of an active shooter about 8:55 a.m. local time (11:55 a.m. ET) at the UPS San Francisco Customer Center, a couple of blocks east of Franklin Square.

A San Francisco police department official has identified the gunman who opened fire at a UPS warehouse in the city as Jimmy Lam.

As the police officers conducted a search for Lam, the other employees still inside the United Parcel Service building exited it with their hands up in the air, at the request of the police.

Fleeing a barrage of gunfire, some workers sought refuge on the roof of the 4-story facility and others ran outside and pounded on the windows of a public bus, witnesses said.

Chaplin said police were interviewing hundreds of witnesses.

"The police officers were right on the scene just like that".

UPS driver Marvin Calderon told KNTV that he recognized the gunman as a fellow employee but did not know him personally.

"Violence is never the answer, but the continuing scourge of gun violence is particularly disheartening", she said.

"The company is saddened and deeply concerned about affected employees, family members and the community we share", UPS says in a statement. Several people who were on site at the time of the shooting are not UPS employees, he added. "I saw people getting out (of the building), and they were wounded".

"This is a tragedy that has touched many lives today", Assistant Police Chief Toney Chaplin said at the news conference.

Auto shop owner Robert Kim told NBC Bay Area that he saw a large group of workers running, shouting "shooter, shooter".

Police returned control of the building to UPS on Wednesday night.

A police spokeswoman declined to comment further to PEOPLE.

Authorities instructed residents to avoid the scene of the shooting near the Bayshore Freeway in the Potrero Hill neighborhood, about 2.5 miles outside downtown San Francisco, according to the Associated Press.
