US Open: How the Irish have fared on Day 2

After grabbing a share of the early second round lead at the US Open, Paul Casey crashed down the leaderboard with a triple bogey as the Erin Hills layout showed its teeth on Friday.

A commercial blimp crashed to the ground and caught fire just outside the course Thursday, about the time the county health department was analyzing samples that confirmed evidence of the E. coli bacteria in water at a hydration station near the 12th hole.

Fowler lost his lead with three straight bogeys on the back nine.

"Showed up for the last six holes, anyway", said the four-times major victor, who made four birdies on his second nine, including his finishing hole, the par-three ninth. You know, I've got four weeks off now. The Canadian was 100 feet away for birdie on No. 6 and burned the edge of the cup on that one, except that it ran by some 7 feet and he three-putted for bogey.

It was a nice comeback for Casey after he triple-bogeyed the par-5 14th and shot 38 on his first nine. He didn't make a birdie the rest of the way and had to settle for a 70.

Leishman is now sharing 13th place, three shots off the pace.

Another possible factor could be the course, the first par-72 used for the U.S. Open since 1992.

"You don't get many rounds at the U.S. Open that are stress-free", Fowler said.

"Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy and Jason Day are all out of the US Open 2017 at Erin Hills".

Yet Johnson was forced to bide his time for the next six holes, unable to convert the few birdie chances that came his way. In fact, the cut-line fell on plus-one - equalling the lowest ever cut in a US Open, at Medinah in 1990 - and anyone who has made it into the final two rounds will still believe anything is possible.

The U.S. Open is hailed as the most hard tournament in golf. He still went out in even-par 36 and was one shot behind Rickie Fowler, who plays in the afternoon.

"I was sticking to the same gameplan, I was doing the same things", said Hadwin, of Abbotsford, B.C.

"I prefer a golf course where we can make some birdies, for sure", Casey added after a record-setting first round that featured 44 scores under par, shattering the previous record 39.

For the first time in a major, the top three players in the world all failed to make the cut. Compatriots Jason Day and Adam Scott are both set to have the weekend off. When I was younger it went everywhere.

Johnson, whose fiancée, Paulina Gretzky, gave birth to the couple's second child on Monday, said he would head home and work on his game over the coming weeks. He didn't hit a fairway after the 10th hole and shot a 78, his highest score in the U.S. Open.

In all, 32 players are within five shots of the lead.

"It was a good display - all my own fault - but a good display of what can happen if you get out of position on this golf course, which is what I did on 14", Casey said.

"As good as I got", he told Spieth, smiling as he walked with him down the fairway.

Johnson, who captured last year's U.S. Open at Oakmont, birdied his first two holes on Friday but missed a 3-footer at the fourth hole and again struggled with the putter, shooting 73 to finish at 4-over 148.
