World Cup coach fired

World Cup coach fired

The 62-year-old former Germany midfielder, who took over on a four-year contract in 2014, had been under pressure after two defeats in four qualifiers going into Tuesday's match. The announcement came just a day after the South Korean squad returned home from Doha, where they lost to Qatar 2-3 in the Asian qualifying tournament for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, reports Xinhua news agency.

The Korea Football Association (KFA) said it chose to part ways with Stielike following a technical committee meeting at the National Football Center in Paju here. "And we notified Stielike about this before the press conference and he accepted the decision".

"The national team head coach should be responsible for the match results, and the technical committee should be responsible in a big plan", he said. "The reason that we will likely select a South Korean coach is because there is too little time for a new foreign coach to understand the characteristics of each player", Lee told reporters after the meeting. "But we thought he failed to deliver the results that we wanted in the final qualifying stage".

Tottenham striker Son Heung-Min underwent successful surgery on his broken right arm on Friday and will take about a month to recover, the Korean Football Association said.

It was widely expected that Stielike would be sacked after Tuesday's loss to Qatar, which left South Korea clinging to the second automatic qualifying spot in Group A with two games to go.

Perennial World Cup participants out of Asia, Korea Republic's Russian Federation 2018 qualifying campaign has been far from convincing, losing three matches from eight and in a tussle with Uzbekistan for the last automatic qualification spot in Group A.

They remain second in Group A, seven points behind already-qualified Iran but just one ahead of third-placed Uzbekistan. South Korea play Iran and then Uzbekistan in their final two games in August and September.
