McCain will return to Senate on Tuesday for healthcare vote

English edition of Asharq Al-Awsat - the world's premier pan-Arab daily.

In a bit of drama, McCain, R-Ariz., who announced last week he was diagnosed with brain cancer, said Monday night that he will return to the Capitol on Tuesday to vote on whether to start debate on the health care bill.

"We are going to vote to repeal and replace Obamacare", he said, arguing that it was better if done sooner rather than later. His face was pale and his cheek was bruised, and he bore a visible red scar and stitches above his left eye where doctors had removed a blood clot. Last week, Trump urged an approach that would repeal the law over two years, giving lawmakers more time to craft new health care legislation.

"Obamacare has wreaked havoc on the lives of innocent, hard-working Americans", he said, according to NBC.

U.S. President Donald Trump is turning the screws on Congress in a bid to pressure them into passing a healthcare bill before they recess in August.

Continuing to deride Democrats, Trump said: "They run out".

In the Senate, Republicans hold a 52-48 majority. Susan Collins of ME is expected to vote no on opening debate, and there are another several senators who have expressed their doubts about supporting the opening of debate too.

It is still a mystery exactly what the Senate plans to vote on as Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has not revealed which version of the GOP plan he hopes to advance to debate.

A vote is also expected Tuesday in the House of Representatives on a sanctions bill that will likely quickly come to the Senate.

Mr. McConnell is obliged by procedural rules to introduce the bill that passed the House for the motion to proceed to debate. It would also punish Iran and North Korea for recent ballistic missile tests. John McCain has delivered an impassioned speech pleading for Republicans and Democrats to work together.

And the situation was eerily reminiscent of a similar scenario involving McCain's good friend, the late Democratic Sen.

In a dramatic turn, Sen. Kennedy died of cancer in August 2009.

McCain's return could inject some suspense into a procedural vote to open debate on the health-care legislation, which so far has failed to pick up strength - no matter which version is considered.

"If this is indeed the plan, I will vote to proceed and I will vote for any all measures that are clean repeal", Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) insisted to reporters on Monday that there is a chance McCain could be flown to DC tomorrow.
