Firefighting aircraft made more than 500 drops of water or retardant on Wednesday, Phillipe said, and only three fires remained active in the Var region - out of dozens that started Wednesday.

The wildfires have consumed almost 9,880 acres of vegetation, according to the French authorities.

A total of 12,000 people were evacuated due to the Bormes-Les-Mimosas fire, with local residents and holidaymakers forced to spend up to two nights in temporary reception centres set up in local gyms and school halls.

The fire in the Mediterranean seaside town of Bormes-les-Mimosas in the southern Var region calmed Thursday because of a drop in the wind - but still marked the skyline with clouds of black smoke that were visible for miles.

Thousands of firefighters were deployed to the region when the fires broke out on Monday and water-dropping planes conducted dozens of sorties over the area.

People EN masse are evacuated. Among those affected were the hordes of tourists who descend on the popular vacation destination every year.

The blaze was the latest of several wind-whipped fires that are ravaging forest and scrubland on the hills and slopes that spill into the Mediterranean sea between the Marseilles and the city of Nice in the southeastern corner of France.

In the Alps-de-Haute Provence department, "the level of danger from forest fires was raised to "very high" in two of its six weather zones", local authorities said on Sunday, adding that people are discouraged from using the area.

A wildfire last month in central Portugal killed 64 people in one night.

At the same time, just over 2,000 firefighters are engaged in mopping-up operations and are on the lookout for re-ignitions.

Ash floated in the air and vast plumes of smoke covered areas of central Portugal, in the area around Serta, about 200 kilometers (125 miles) northeast of Lisbon.

Nearly 2,000 firefighters were deployed at six major blazes across Portugal Thursday.

More than 70 percent of Portugal is enduring a severe drought. Civil Protection Agency spokeswoman Patricia Gaspar said continuing strong winds and tinder-dry woodland remain a menace.

The statement said that some 10,000 people - about 3,000 of them campers - were evacuated from La Londe and nearby Bormes and La Lavandou.
