Raw: Violent Clashes in Jerusalem, West Bank

The protests - over the placement of metal detectors and turnstiles at the site - turned into clashes in which the three men were shot dead, the interior ministry said.

The Secretary General has urged the Israeli and Palestinian leaders to refrain from actions that could further escalate the situation.

A second victim, named as 20-year-old student Muhammed Abu Ghanam, has reportedly died of wounds after being shot by police in At-Tur, also known as the Mount of Olives.

Three Palestinians were killed.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas spoke with USA counterpart Donald Trump's senior adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner, urging the White House to intervene, the Palestinians' official Wafa news agency reported.

NPR's Daniel Estrin said police "blocked buses of Muslims coming to Jerusalem from around the country".

The security measures were brought in after two Israeli policemen were killed in an attack by three Arab gunmen near the shrine.

Earlier on Friday (local time), thousands of Palestinians in Jerusalem and the West Bank clashed with Israeli troops, burning tyres and throwing stones and firecrackers.

The Palestinian Red Crescent has put the number of those injured in East Jerusalem and the West Bank at some 140 people. The officers then fired rubber bullets and stun grenades to disperse the worshippers and move them back. The Palestinian Fatah movement called for a "Day of Rage" Wednesday to protest Israel's security measures.

He was shot by a neighbour - who was a soldier with the Israeli Defense Forces - and taken to hospital, but his condition was unclear.

Security forces prohibited Palestinian men under the age of 50 from entering Jerusalem's Old City for Friday Muslim prayers this week, .

Every night for the last week Palestinians have been refusing to go through the metal detectors and have instead been conducting their prayers on the streets.

Israeli media said the assailant was in his late teens and had posted on Facebook that he was upset by the events at the Jerusalem shrine.
