Klopp Says He's "Fine" With Liverpool's Center Backs

Klopp Says He's

Liverpool publicly ended their interest in Van Dijk in June after Southampton threatened to report the Reds to the Premier League over an alleged illegal approach for the player but have since restarted negotiations with the Saints after they got wind of Van Dijk's desires. The transfer market is open until the 31st of August.

Adding that he had been left "frustrated" by Southampton's refusal to entertain offers for him, Van Dijk said being injured towards the end of last season had given him fresh perspective on where his future lay.

Liverpool won 3-1 against Spanish side Athletic Bilbao in a pre-season friendly match.

Holland manager Dick Advocaat has waded into the row between Southampton and Virgil van Dijk, urging the club to grant the defender's wish of a summer move. We can not force the things and we would never get a centre back just [for the sake of it].

Klopp says improving on what he's already got isn't easy and he's prepared to push on with Ragnar Klavan and Joe Gomez providing back up for his first choice centre-back combination of Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip.

Van Dijk continued: "I feel I have no alternative after I was given notice of the club's intention to impose a disciplinary sanction against me of a fine equivalent to two weeks' wages".

"Look out there and tell me five that would make us stronger. I don't think we need more", Klopp said recently.

The Reds had to formally end their interest, after all, though the suspicion remains that this was a PR move rather than a genuine end to their efforts to secure the services of van Dijk. "Five. Then you win a prize", Klopp was quoted as saying by ESPNFC.

"It is with regret that I can confirm that I have today handed in a transfer request to leave Southampton".

"What I said is the truth", he said.

In what could be called a stunning turnaround, Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp recently spoke of the club's transfer targets.
