North Korea frees Canadian missionary 'on sick bail'

North Korea frees Canadian missionary 'on sick bail'

He was released on medical and humanitarian grounds, according to the Central Court of North Korea, the state-owned KCNA news agency reported.

In December of that year, Lim was convicted of ostensibly plotting to overthrow the Kim regime and was given a life sentence in a hard labour camp.

A Canadian delegation led by Daniel Jean, Trudeau's national security adviser, was in the North Korean capital of Pyongyang this week to discuss Lim's case.

Cho, like Lim a native of South Korea, said the pastor will need time to rest and recover to full health but for now, he's relieved at Lim's release.

The missionary was also found guilty of having carried out subversive activities with the intention of damaging the dignity of the supreme leadership and the social system of North Korea.

The release of Korean-Canadian Lim Hyeon-su comes amid escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsular stemming from the North's continued provocations.

Pak said that the pastor's health had worsened while in North Korean custody and he had also experienced dramatic weight loss.

On Wednesday, North Korea said it was considering plans for a missile strike on the U.S. Pacific territory of Guam, just hours after President Donald Trump, unhappy with Pyongyang's nuclear weapons program, told the North that any threat to the United States would be met with "fire and fury".

Family spokesperson Lisa Pak said there was "a long way to go in terms of Reverend Lim's healing".

The spokesman said Canada has been in close communication with South Korea on Lim's captivity as it is a like-minded country that supports South Korea's policy direction on the North. Two of them, Kim Hak-song and Kim Sang-dok, were detained earlier this year, while the third, Kim Dong-chul, was arrested in October 2015 and sentenced to 10 years of hard labor on charges of espionage and subversion.

In an interview with CNN a year ago, Lim confirmed that he was indeed shipped off to a labor camp to serve out his life sentence with eight hours a day of digging holes to plant apple trees.

The student died less than a week after returning to the U.S. There are three Americans still being held in North Korea.

That delegation was pivotal towards securing Lim's release, Ontario MPP Raymond Cho said.

North Korea is ranked #1 on Open Door USA's World Watch List of countries where Christians face the most persecution.

Lim's parishioners say that have never lost faith and never stopped praying since their pastor was imprisoned in North Korea.

"That incident met with major USA and global backlash against North Korea".
