Patriots first National Football League franchise to purchase team planes

According to Rovell, the planes were retrofitted with all first-class seats, some of which fully recline.

It's worth noting that these planes generally cost somewhere between $5 million and $65 million, according to Rovell.

With the buying of the two planes, the New England Patriots become the first National Football League team to own their own planes.

Per the report, the Patriots bought extended-range planes that can fly up to 12 hours nonstop. The outside of one of planes reads "Patriots" above the team logo and features five Lombardi trophies on the tail.

ESPN said the team's flight operations will be run out of Providence.

"The rising cost of chartering National Football League teams makes the decision to buy a plane somewhat easier", ESPN wrote.

Rovell noted that one plane will primarily be used as the main mode of transportation for road games, while the other plane will be kept as a backup.

Last year, The Cardinals, Ravens, Colts, Jaguars, Steelers and Dolphins were informed that American Airlines would no longer fly them.

The rising cost of chartering National Football League teams makes the decision to buy a plane somewhat easier.

Those trips are expected to cost about $4 million anyway, so the Patriots can save money in the long-run by purchasing the planes, which they can also rent out when not in use to help recoup some of the expense. The team was reportedly interested in the idea that their own planes would "give athletes a leg up on the recovery process".
