Tillerson Holds 'Lengthy' Post-Sanctions Talks with Russian Foreign Minister

Europe can hardly act independently when it comes to relations with Russia, while United States policy is reminiscent of the worst legacy of the previous administration, according to Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov.

The statement said that countries which supported the measures were "scared by the US threat of sanctions", pledging "physical action" and a "substantial action of justice" by the North Korean military and people against them. Lavrov did not disclose the exact date of the expected conference. A few days back, United States President Donald Trump had said that his country's relationship with Russian Federation is at all time "dangerously low".

That's what Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov (sir-GAY' lahv-RAWF') has said in televised comments after his meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson in Manila on Sunday.

Lavrov said his USA counterpart asked him extensively about Russia's decision to expel United States diplomats in retaliation for Washington's latest round of economic sanctions on Moscow.

Russian Federation also closed a USA recreational retreat on the outskirts of Moscow.

"The backdrop for that is obviously terrible given the Russian anger over the sanctions bill and the continued day-to-day revelations in the Russia probe", said Carnegie Endowment analyst Andrew Weiss, referring to investigations into potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia during the 2016 USA presidential election. "There's no alternative to that".

Trump also lashed out at lawmakers for endorsing the sanctions measure while blaming Congress for fostering a tense relationship with Moscow.

The reason, he said, is that whoever Trump brings into his White House is unlikely to change the course of U.S.

"Our relationship with Russian Federation is at an all-time & very risky low". The U.S. had looked warily at a series of safe zones in Syria that Russian Federation had negotiated along with Turkey and Iran - but not the U.S.

Last week, Mr Trump grudgingly signed a bill punishing Russian Federation for election meddling and making it harder for him to ease sanctions on Vladimir Putin's government.

There's no immediate reaction to the meeting from the US side.

"And trying to help him understand just how serious this incident had been and how seriously it had damaged the relationship between the USA and the American people and the Russian people, that this had created serious mistrust and that we simply have to find some way to deal with that".

Trump has been largely dismissive of the investigations in Washington over the Russian election interference, calling them a "witch hunt" and an excuse by Democrats to explain his upset victory over his Democratic challenger, former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Trump denies any collusion and has repeatedly questioned USA intelligence about Moscow's involvement.

The US will respond by 1 September to Russia's expulsion of 755 staff from the US embassy in Moscow, he said. The two top officials discussed the Ukraine situation and several other issues of interest to the two countries.

Tillerson told reporters that Moscow had indicated "some willingness" to seek ways to move forward on matters related to Ukraine.

Word that USA special representative Kurt Volker plans to visit the Russian capital was the latest sign that Washington is giving fresh attention to resolving the Ukraine conflict.
