Tropical Storm Franklin Weakens After Landfall

Tropical Storm Franklin Weakens After Landfall

Tropical Storm Franklin is located about 285 miles east-southeast of Chetumal, Mexico, moving to the west-northwest about 10 to 15 mph.

A Hurricane Watch is in place for the Mexican coast between Chetumal to Punta Allen. This does not include Cancún or Cozumel. To account for this, hurricane Watches are in effect from Puerto de Veracruz north to Rio Panuco.

The storm is already showing signs of predicted weakening as it moves across the Yucatan Peninsula.

Weather models suggest the system will cross somewhere over the Yucatan peninsula, bringing with it heavy rains and tropical storm force winds. Hurricane drive winds reached out up to 140 miles (220 kilometers) from the inside.

Brian McNoldy of the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science notes that the storm has a low chance of becoming Hurricane Franklin.

Tropical Storm Franklin formed late Sunday in the northwestern portion of the Caribbean Sea.

From there it will move back out over the Bay of Campeche and will likely restrengthen before a second landfall in eastern Mexico.

Up to a foot of drenching rainfall is possible, with the potential for life-threatening flash floods, the National Hurricane Center warned. Rip currents and coastal flooding are also expected. Strengthening is forecast until the center reaches the eastern coast of the Yucatan peninsula, and Franklin could be near hurricane strength by the time landfall occurs this evening.

Landfall probabilities forecast by the Colorado State team remain above average, suggesting a greater threat that a hurricane could strike the USA coastline than in recent years.

A high pressure system north of the affected region will likely keep the impact of the storm away from the United States.

Even if 99L does not develop into a tropical storm or Hurricane Gert, the chances are that another weather system will earn the name during the 2017 hurricane season.
